If you like bikes or beer…or beer and bikes, then Speedway Meadow has just the event for you this weekend. On Saturday, September 26, 2009 (11am to 5pm), one of the wackiest festivals in Golden Gate Park is taking place – the Tour de Fat. Thanks to New Belgian Ale, you can participate in this party for free and do something good in the process.

It’s time to indulge in the live performances, games, drinks, and even the tunes of a New Orleans-style funeral. Why the funeral? Because some people choose to lay their cars to rest in exchange for bicycles during this event. That’s right, they hand over their car, title, and keys for a “New Belgium, fully-loaded, hand-crafted, Fort Collins-built commuter bike and trailer.” The festival also promises food – which usually runs out pretty quickly, so it’s highly suggested that you come early.

Additionally, the sale of all beer will go towards two nonprofit organizations – the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition and the Bay Area Ridge Trail Council. If you want to join in on the bike parade, registration is at 10am. For more information, check out http://sfbike.org/fat or http://www.newbelgium.com/tour-de-fat.
