Soccer (Futbol)

It doesn’t matter if you’re a fan of the World Cup or anticipate the latest news on David Beckham; soccer is a popular sport in California as the weather offers a comforting backdrop for both friendly and competitive play. When looking for an amazing natural scene to host your next soccer match, the Golden Gate Park is one of the best recreational settings about the city.

Who Plays Soccer at Golden Gate Park?

With 10,000 seats surrounding a field and public all-weather track, many different sporting teams reserve Kezar Stadium for practices and matches. Located on 755 Stanyan St, an assortment of high school leagues and recreational tournaments are held at the stadium after arrangements are made through the Recreation and Park athletic office, (753-7032).

The Golden Gate Park also provides a space for practice, pick-up competition, and games for the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department’s Mission Division (a non-profit city agency). This association is responsible for offering two recreational soccer leagues throughout the year. Soccer players across San Francisco can be seen scoring goals for the Jose Coronado Memorial Futsal, which is an indoor soccer crew, whose league runs from January to April and plays across a variety of gyms about the city. The 7 a Side Outdoor Soccer League can be enjoyed from June to August with games and practices held at three different main fields in San Francisco.

Soccer at Kezar Stadium

Kezar Stadium will also accommodate the California Victory, a USL First Division professional soccer club for San Francisco, which is recognized as an expansion team slated for the 2007 season. A milestone is accomplished through the establishment of the team because it will be the first European-owned squad to compete in the United Soccer League, as well as the first USL First Division lineup located in California since the San Diego Flash folded in 2001.

Additional Soccer Fields in Golden Gate Park

To enjoy soccer in other areas of the park, you will find soccer pitches located at the Beach Chalet soccer field situated opposite 48th Avenue. Polo Field also offers a popular space for soccer matches. You should know that reservations (at no charge) are necessary, which can be arranged by calling 831-5510.

This website rightly talks about recreation in a natural setting. This is the beauty of sports in Golden Gate Park. However, it is under threat.

Please help fight a misguided project that will destroy habitat in the western end of Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. The Beach Chalet soccer complex will remove over 7 acres of living grass and habitat and replace it with over 7 acres of artificial turf. It will add 150,000 watts of sports lighting, lighted until 10:00 pm every night, right next to Ocean Beach — the place that San Franciscans and visitors alike visit to view the sunset, to sit by fire rings in the darkness, and to gaze at the stars. The project will cut down over 55 trees, add an acre of paving, and introduce seating for over 1,000 people to an area that is now completely green vegetation. It will increase the parking lot by 33% – all of this in a city that claims to be ‘green’ and to have a transit-first policy.

Once the artificial turf goes in, fees will be raised for permits to play on these fields.

We support youth sports, but Golden Gate Park is just the wrong location for this project.

There will be a hearing before the California Coastal Commission in May that will decide the final outcome for Golden Gate Park and Ocean Beach.

Please go online to our website to learn what you can do!
