Located on the western edge of Golden Gate Park, the tall trees bordering the striking grassy valley set the scene of Old Hellman Hollow (formally Old Speedway). It is here that locals gather to celebrate birthdays, graduations and other special occasions.

Things to Do

The large, flat grassy space of Old Hellman Hollow provides an ideal opportunity to spread out and enjoy a competitive game of volleyball, kickball, soccer or another lawn games. Bring out the croquet balls or horseshoes – it’s time for a bit of healthy competition. Picnic-goers will need to bring their own chairs and blankets to the Hollow, as there are no tables or BBQ grills in this area. You can always use your own grill if you plan on feasting on hamburgers and hot dogs.

An adult party in the Hollow can enjoy a few beers or glasses of wine, but leave the hard liquor and kegs at home – they are not permitted in the park. Open containers must stay inside the picnic area. When planning an outing at Old Hellman Hollow, keep in mind that there are no onsite or nearby restrooms.

Location and Parking

You will find Old Hellman Hollow stretching from the back of the parking lot along the east side of 41st Avenue/Chain of Lakes Boulevard – right between Martin Luther King Jr. and John F. Kennedy Drives. While there are no signs marking Old Hellman Hollow, you will find that the parking lot is visible from the street. Free parking for Old Hellman Hollow is available in the lot on 41st Avenue/Chain of Lakes Boulevard.
