If you’ve ever wanted to experience what it’s like to live during medieval times, the Archery Range at Golden Gate Park will provide the ideal opportunity on Saturday, August 17 with 2013 Debardchery. This free event will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and involve lunch, tournaments, games, and of course, a lot of participants dressed in medieval clothing. All parties involved are required to wear medieval attire, and while free loaner tunics and accessories will be on hand…it’s always more fun to come dressed in your own ensemble.
The gates for the event will open at 10 a.m. and an Archers’ Auction will take place at 11 a.m., where you’ll have a chance to win one of many medieval-themed prizes. The Archery Tournament will kick off at 11:30 p.m.; it follows the theme of the 7 Deadly Sins, where archers face several 2-D animal targets and one 3-D animal target that will represent greed, envy, sloth, wrath, lust, gluttony, and pride. All skill levels are welcome to participate: beginners, intermediate, and expert.
A free lunch will follow the novelty shoot (held in the early afternoon). Guests are encouraged to bring a dish to share. Contributions should come based on your name: A-J: side/salad; K-R: dessert; and S-Z: main dish. After lunch, a bardic competition will unfold, where competitors will present family-friendly stories, songs, and poems that follow this year’s theme of ‘Womanly Virtues.’
Other highlights of the event will include silly games that both adults and children can play, and a timed archery competition in the late afternoon. The gate closes at 5 p.m.
Archers participating should bring their own bow and arrows. Please note that compound and crossbows are not allowed. You will find the Archery Range located at 47th Avenue and Fulton Street.
