Hello, September 2022! Golden Gate Park events for September 2022 include familiar attractions and events we haven’t been able to experience fully since the pandemic. This month, you’ll be able to remember what it’s like to jam out at the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival (the first in-person version of this get-together since 2019) and get lost in the beauty of the Flower Pianos at the San Francisco Botanical Garden. Below, you’ll find plenty more September events at Golden Gate Park to add to your things-to-do list:
Singer/Songwriter Wednesdays – Golden Gate Bandshell – September 7, 14, 21
Free live concerts every Wednesday shine a spotlight on the talents of local singers and songwriters from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., with performances on the following dates in September:
- September 7: Market to Bandshell produced in association with Sunset Mercantile (Carlie Mari 4 p.m., Jon & The Baptists 5 p.m., and The Seagulls 6 p.m.)
- September 14: An Evening with Stephanie Woodford
- September 21: The Season of Us (4 p.m.), Jenny Kerr Duo (5 p.m.), and Casa Del Sol (6 p.m.)
NightLife: Smoke & Mirrors – California Academy of Sciences – September 8
If optical illusions are your thing, then you won’t want to miss this NightLife event. The Academy will explore how both humans and animals use the power of illusion to their benefit. Some activities and fun to look forward to include herpetologist Erica Ely, colorful bird facts with the Curator of Ornithology and Mammalogy, interactive illusions with a “legendary” local illusionist, and learning how to use a wood burning pen to make a take-home craft.

- September 15: Nighty NightLife – Calling all night owls! Highlights include sleep research, exploring the dream world, creating your own signature scent, and animal kingdom sleep discussions.

Soul/Jazz/R&B Happy Hour – Golden Gate Bandshell – September 9
Enjoy a soulful evening from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. featuring two sets of Brazilian Jazz with Homenagem Brasileira with special guest Harvey Wainapel on saxophones. This is a free event.
U.S. Open Watch Party & Community Tennis Day – GGP Tennis Courts – September 10
On top of watching exhilarating tennis, enjoy free on-court activities starting at 10 a.m. for all levels, including high-level exhibition matches on the sunken court. This event is free and open to the public. The event schedule includes: 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. (fun drills, quick matches, fast serve booth, and exhibition matches) and 12:30 p.m. – 4 p.m. (free U.S. Open Watch party of women’s finals on jumbo screen, food, and drinks for sale in JFK Promenade).
P.S. The first 250 people to arrive will receive a free can of tennis balls from Lifetime Activities. This free event is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Lisa & Douglas Goldman Tennis Center at 50 Bowling Green Drive.
Kids Fest – GGP Bandshell – September 10
If you’re looking for something to do with the kids this week, head to the Kids Fest— a free outdoor performance with Charity and the JAMBand and Magician Mike Della Penna. This event is from 12 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
African American Quilt Guild of Oakland Workshop – de Young Museum – September 10
The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco presents this African American Quilt Guild of Oakland Quilting Workshop from 1 to 3 p.m. This program is part of a Free Saturdays three-part series inspired by the art of Faith Ringgold and her “experimental story quilts.”
This workshop will take place at Hamon Tower from 1 to 3 p.m. and consists of making a nine-patch quilt. You will learn how to design, hand-sew, and hand-quilt your own mini quilt. There is a limit of 20 participants, ages 12 and up.
Last date: October 8.
Dahlia Society Open House – Dahlia Dell – September 10
The Dahlia Society of California will host a free expert-led tour of the Dahlia Dell at Golden Gate Park from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. Here’s the ideal time to get acquainted with growing tips, explore history, and hear fun stories centered on one of the most popular flowers at Golden Gate Park. Interested? Meet at the Dahlia sign at the bottom of the Conservatory of Flowers steps.
Dance 5Rhythms® in the Garden – SF Botanical Garden – September 10
Music, creative dance movements, and moving meditation! Join a 5Rhythms® outdoor session to embrace the natural elements of a botanical garden meadow. The fee for this event is $35 for the general public (there’s a 10% discount for SFBG members!).

End of Summer Bonfire – Ocean Beach – September 10
Join hundreds of people celebrating the end of summer together with one last hurrah at Ocean Beach. Enjoy a family-friendly night filled with food, games, networking opportunities, and pure fun with Bay Area DJ Jerry Ross from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. (the DJ sets up at 5 p.m.). 2022 Golden Gate Gaymes – AIDS Memorial Grove – September 11
The Imperial Council is hosting an afternoon of games (like LipSync and Swim, The Wheel of Misfortune, and an obstacle course, just to name a few), prizes, and plenty of outdoor fun from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. See a list of games and more information on the Golden Gate Gaymes.
Crucial Reggae Sunday – Golden Gate Bandshell – September 11, 25
Unwind with reggae rhythms at the Bandshell featuring the following entertainment:

Flower Piano 2022 – SF Botanical Garden – September 16 – 20
Twelve pianos are hidden throughout the San Francisco Botanical Garden in Golden Gate Park…. explore the beauty and wonder of outdoor music at its finest. The pianos are spread across the 55 acres of the Garden. In addition to scheduled professional performances, participants will have the chance for open play time at each of the pianos.

Comedy Day – Robin Williams Meadow – September 18
One stage. Five hours. 40 comedians. Enjoy the laughs and entertainment of the 41st annual Comedy Day at Golden Gate Park, which always includes a few surprises and special guests. This free event is from noon to 5 p.m.
One-Year Anniversary Party – Beach Chalet – September 23
Come celebrate the one-year anniversary of the Jennifer Murphy Trio performing live, every Friday night at the Beach Chalet. This evening celebration is from 6 to 9 p.m. and will include special musical guests, a signature cocktail, and a few other surprises.
Easy Garden Sketching – SF Botanical Garden – September 23
Join award-winning artist Eileen P. Goldenberg for a sketching session in the Zellerbach Perennial Garden, where you’ll have plenty of gazebos, plants, flowers, benches, and more to draw. Eileen will demonstrate how to start a sketch using large shapes, find shadows, and add color. The fee for this workshop is $95 (includes a complimentary sketch kit with watercolor paper, a water brush, a pen, a pencil, and a small palette).
This event is scheduled for 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Participants will meet at the main gate ticket office at 10:45 a.m. and walk over to the Garden.
Sound Bath Experience – SF Botanical Garden – September 23
Spend the afternoon enjoying a Blue Muse & the Celestial Voices’Sound Bath Experience where beauty, sound, and tranquility intersect to provide a revitalizing soundscape with crystal singing bowls, gongs, ocean drums, and vocals. It is suggested to bring something to feel comfortable while resting on the ground (grass) for an hour, such as a yoga mat, blanket, pillow, loose-fitting clothing, etc. This event is from 2-3 p.m.
Free Saturday: Wellness Series Part One– de Young Museum – September 24
The de Young Museum is hosting a free literacy-themed “back to school” program with Get Empowered! and Youth Speaks, featuring drop-in resources, activities, and entertainment for the whole family. This event is the first in a three-part Free Saturdays program series that focuses on health, wellness, and food justice. Future dates will be announced at a later date.
This Saturday, you can participate in Wellness Series Part One: Back to School from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in Barbro Osher Sculpture Garden, Kimball Education Gallery, and Wilsey Court.
The schedule of events includes:
- Writing Workshops, Kimball Gallery: 11 to 11:45 a.m. + noon to 12:45 p.m.
- Get Empowered! Capoeira Dance Workshop, Sculpture Garden: Noon to 12:30 p.m. + 1:15 to 1:45 p.m.
- Spoken word and showcase performances, Wilsey Court: 1 to 2:30 p.m.
2022 Hardly Strictly Bluegrass – Hellman Hollow and more – September 30, October 1 & 2
Prepare for the first in-person version of Hardly Strictly Bluegrass since 2019! This free festival is officially back at Golden Gate Park with a host of confirmed artists that includes Sam Bush, AJ Lee & Blue Summit, Las Caeteras, Marcus Mumford, Joy Oladokun, Lucius, Galactic, Charley Crockett, Buddy Miller, Allison Russel, and DaShawn Hickman.
Hardly Strictly Bluegrass schedule is:

- Saturday, October 1 (11 a.m. – 7 p.m.)
