The Bandshell also has a host of free music concerts scheduled for the month. And, don’t get spooked with Halloween events at Golden Gate Park; there are plenty of opportunities to get a good scare (and candy) during a visit. 2022 Hardly Strictly Bluegrass – Hellman Hollow and more – October 1 & 2

Kickstart October by enjoying the first in-person version of Hardly Strictly Bluegrass since 2019! Golden Gate Park is hosting this free festival. There’s still time to enjoy the talent of artists such as Elvis Costello, Marlon Williams, The Wako Brothers, and Antibalas on Saturday, October 1, and Allison Brown, Danielle Ponder, Emmylou Harris, and Marcus Mumford on Sunday, October 2, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Hardly Strictly Bluegrass performances will take place at Hellman Hollow, Lindley Meadow, and Marx Meadow in Golden Gate Park, with 9 a.m. entry on Saturday and Sunday. See more information on Hardly Strictly Bluegrass.

SF’s “Public Space” Election Forum + Candidate Q&A – Spreckels Temple of Music – October 3

Election season is fast approaching, and you probably have a few questions for some of the people on the ballot. This Public Space Forum allows you to participate in discussion with candidates for San Francisco city supervisor from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Talk about the issues you care about. The SF Parks Alliance hosts this event in partnership with SPUR. It will be moderated by Meaghan Mitchell of the SF Standard and Manny Yekutiel of Manny’s. Afterward, there will be a meet and greet with the candidates. This is a free event.

Singer/Songwriter Wednesdays – Golden Gate Bandshell – October 5, 12, 19, 26

Free live concerts every Wednesday shine a spotlight on the talents of local singers and songwriters from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., with performances on the following dates in October:

  • October 5: Market to Bandshell produced with Sunset Mercantile, come listen to Carry Nation at 4 p.m., Revolushn at 5 p.m., and Flare Up (from the UK) at 6 p.m.
  • October 12: An Evening with Evan Wardell: (Kevin North Band, 4 p.m., Evan Wardell, 5 p.m., and The Quilters, 6 p.m.).
  • October 19: Entertainment includes Soul Glitch at 4 p.m., Sara Rodenburg at  5 p.m., and Essence at 6 p.m.
  • October 26: An Out of Body Expo pre-Halloween show with Adventure Playground (Acoustic) at 4 p.m., Salacious Wizard Cult at 5 p.m., and Godblink Goblin at 6 p.m., plus Ainsley Tharp performing in between sets.

On the Edge Late Night – de Young Museum – October 6

Here’s an event just for de Young members! Enjoy a late-night, premiere afterparty with exclusive access to the museum, craft cocktails, late-night bites, entertaining pop-ups, dancing, and performances that highlight the talent of Bay Area local brands, artists, and musicians. Other things to look forward to include singer Madame Gandhi, the headliner for the evening; an artist lounge; the She Bends Neon Bar craft cocktails; and limited-edition Grand Opening Bakery desserts by Melissa Chou. Your ticket also gives you entry to the Ramses the Great, the Gold of Pharaohs, and Faith Ringgold: American People exhibitions.

Oktoberfest – Park Chalet – October 7

Music, food, and entertainment (plus prizes!). Come celebrate this autumn tradition at the Park Chalet with family and friends. Park Chalet’s regular menu will also include a special Oktoberfest menu consisting of soft stick pretzels, pickled vegetables, Bavarian Onion Tarts, braised brisket sliders on soft pretzel buns, Bratwurst sausage, and Chocolate Stout Brownies. General admission is $40 for this event, which includes a custom stein, 1 liter of beer, and live music by Alpine Sound from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Doors open at 5 p.m.

African American Quilt Guild of Oakland Quilting Workshop – de Young Museum – October 8

The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco presents this African American Quilt Guild of Oakland Quilting Workshop and family art-making from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. This program is the final installment of a Free Saturdays three-part series inspired by the art of Faith Ringgold and her “experimental story quilts.”

There will be family art making in Wilsey Court and a quilting workshop in the Kimball Education Gallery that consists of making a nine-patch quilt from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. You will learn how to design, hand-sew, and hand-quilt your own mini quilt. There is a limit of 20 participants, ages 12 and up.

Lifetime Activities and USTA Northern California will be hosting a free Kids’ Day at Golden Gate Park with exciting on and off-court tennis activities, a free T-shirt, and lunch. Capacity is limited. After all the fun, hang out and watch the finals of the KPSF Open. This event is at the Lisa + Douglas Goldman Tennis Center, 50 Bowling Green Drive, from 9 a.m. – 11:30 p.m.

“German Day” Festival – Spreckels Temple of Music – October 16

Celebrate German culture and music with the United German-American Societies of San Francisco (UGAS), the Deutscher Musikverein of San Francisco (DMV), and the Excelsior German Center at the Altenheim in Oakland (EGC) from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Various German organizations and performers will entertain on stage and sponsor informational tables. Highlights include activities for children and adults, and food available for purchase, including “Biergarten” beer and wine. Stop by food trucks behind the Bandshell or enjoy a picnic in the open area.

SuperNatural Halloween – California Academy of Sciences – October 28

There’s a fright at the museum and you are invited. Costumed visitors at every turn, this is the Academy’s annual family-friendly Halloween party filled with generous werewolves, vampires, and mummies. General admission is 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m., with doors opening at 5 p.m. for VIP tickets. Bring in autumn and the fall season with a drawing workshop celebrating the beauty of pumpkins and gourds. Try out a range of colored pencil techniques and enjoy a presentation of Dorota’s botanical drawings of various pumpkins, plus a demonstration on how to approach observational drawing.
