One of Golden Gate Park’s most beloved outdoor events has returned to in-person tomfoolery (the Turkey Trot). And if you’re looking to enjoy outdoor music performances, the Bandshell is the place to be this month with multiple entertainers (think reggae, soul, jazz, singers, and songwriters!). There are plenty of things to do before, after, and on Thanksgiving (have dinner at one of the Chalet restaurants!). Soul/Jazz Fridays – Golden Gate Bandshell – November 5, 12, 26

Enjoy a soulful Friday at Golden Gate Park with a variety of musicians ready to send you into the weekend right. Expect the following performers in November:

  • Nov 5 – Habibi Afghanistan (presented by Sevan Seas and Value Culture) includes Qais Essau (4 p.m. – 4:45 p.m.) Mozhdah (5 p.m. – 6 p.m.), and Kabul Dream (6:15 p.m. – 7:15 p.m.)
  • Nov 12 – Cartoonjazz Nonet (two sets at 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.)
  • Nov 26 – The Brassworks Band (two sets 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.)

Outdoor Yoga – Sunbathers Meadows – November 6, 7, 13, 14, 20, 21, 27, 28

Every Saturday and Sunday, you can enjoy outdoor yoga with Divine Yoga Studio at 10 a.m. Increase your strength and flexibility with this Vinyasa-style yoga flow which links breath to movement. Students can easily vary their actions according to their level. The Sunbathers Meadows is on Nancy Pelosi Drive. Tickets start at $13 for this event. 

Reggae Concert – Golden Gate Bandshell – November 6

Looking for something to do this Saturday? The SF Parks Alliance presents Positive Bay Area Reggae artists with Native Elements and MC/DJ Irie Dole from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. 

JAMboodas Music and Dance Class – SF Botanical Garden – November 7 

Join Charity Kahn for an incredibly interactive music class that’ll inspire your kids to dance, sing, breathe, and get moving in the healthiest of ways. Enjoy all-original music and a 45-minute bonding experience full of rhythm, melody, and themes such as peace, love, and kindness. This event (from 10:30 a.m. to 11:15 a.m.) is best for children 0-5 years old, plus a caregiver. Individual class fee is family with one child ($25) with additional child/sibling tickets for $12.50.

Reggae Sunday + Dance Party – Golden Gate Bandshell – November 7 

There is a full day of fun with the Sunday Afternoon Dance Party, from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m., followed by a Reggae Sunday concert. After working up a sweat dancing the afternoon away, you can sit back and enjoy reggae tunes with Crucial (featuring DJ Jah Yzer plus special guest Tufflikeiron). This event is from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., presented by Value Culture.

Singer/Songwriter Wednesday – Golden Gate Bandshell – November 10, 17, 24

Wednesdays at the Bandshell are when singers and songwriters shine. This month, you can expect the following performances at Golden Gate Park from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.:

NightLife: Neon – California Academy of Sciences – November 11 + 18 (theme TBA)

Learn about the science and art behind neon, plus explore all things luminous at the Academy (from underwater illumination to neon glass blowing). This event is from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. and is for the 21 and over crowd only. Valid identification required.

All tickets must be purchased online in advance (get your tickets here). You must also have proof of full vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test taken within 72 hours.

Strings in the Park – Golden Gate Bandshell – November 13

The SF Parks Alliance presents Strings in the Park this Saturday with the Del Sol String Quartet (from noon to 1:30 p.m. and the Sierra Quartet Del Sol String Quartet (2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.). Both performances will have a 15-minute intermission.

Used Library Book Sale – Helen Crocker Russell Library – November 13

The Helen Crocker Russell Library is holding a used library book sale from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., where you can score many discounted horticulture books. There will be hundreds of gently read books available on various plant and gardening-related subjects. Proceeds go towards library programs and new purchases for the collection. You must wear a mask to attend this event.

Plant Sale – SF Botanical Garden – November 13 & 14

You get not one but two days to browse winter blooming plants to brighten your gloomiest of days. The Plant Arbor has a lovely selection of plants for sale from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., including Fuchsias, Cistus, Aloes, Arbutus, Begonias, Hydrangeas, Ceanothus, Arctostaphylos, Leucadendrons, Correas, Grevilleas,  Dichroas,  Banksias, and many others.

Reggae Sunday Performances – Golden Gate Bandshell November 14 & 21 

Spend the evening with Crucial, featuring DJ Jah Yzer and special guests for Sunday reggae tunes at Golden Gate Park. This month, the following guests will join the party:

Spreckels Lake 5K & Lightning Mile – JFK Drive & 36th Ave – November 14

The Dolphin South End Runners is opening up a small number of pre-registrations for select race events to non-members for $10. In addition, walk-up race day registration is available when space permits (at John F. Kennedy Drive & 36th Avenue near Spreckles Lake). These races are currently limited to 100 participants max. DSE Members receive pre-registration links by email. 

Enjoy two races in one; a fast, downhill 1-mile race (start time 9 a.m.) or a scenic 5K loop, which begins immediately after the 1 mile ends. Some people choose to do both.

Sven & The Masterful Orchestra – Music Concourse/Bandshell – November 20

Free music show at Golden Gate Park alert!

The Music Concourse/Bandshell is hosting the Vyking Entertainment Music & SF Parks Alliance event, bringing Sven & The Masterful Orchestra and special guest acoustic musician Lara Louise to the park. This 17-piece orchestra will entertain with American classic tunes from Sinatra, Bennett, Martin, and more. In addition, food vendors will be present.

This event is from 12 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Peru in San Francisco: Art, Dance, and Gastronomy – de Young Museum – November 20

As part of its Free Saturdays program, the de Young Museum will host a full day of free activities, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., to celebrate the bicentennial of Peru’s independence and shine a light on its historical ties to San Francisco.

See ancient Peruvian art from the Max Uhle collection at the Phoebe A. Hearst Museum of Anthropology (1 p.m.). Hear from award-winning Peruvian composer Jimmy López Bellido (1:30 p.m.). Other things to enjoy: traditional folk dance performances (2 p.m.) in Wilsey Court and food tastings (2:30 p.m. at the Café Terrace).

All programs are free and open to the public. 

Turkey Trot – Polo Field – November 25

This year, the 19th annual Thanksgiving walk and run, best known as the Turkey Trot, is live and in person! Come dressed to impress in your finest feathers to participate in the day’s events:

  • 5-mile Turkey Trail Trot
  • 3-mile Pilgrim Promenade (start time of 8:40 a.m.)
  • 100-meter Kids Gobbler Chase at 8 a.m.

The Turkey Trot takes place at Polo Field (JFK Drive at 36th Avenue).

Thanksgiving Dinner – Beach & Park Chalet – November 25

The Beach and Park Chalet offers a three-course prix-fixe menu for $75, with add-on starters you can share. There is also a two-course children’s menu for $30. Don’t forget to quench your thirst with tasty cocktails and traditional mouth-watering desserts. Some of the menu items to look forward to include buttermilk-fried calamari, farro risotto, pan-seared seabass, apple crisp, pumpkin spiked lattes, and roasted turkey, of course.

You must make a reservation to enjoy this meal on Thanksgiving, available from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
