Sketching in the Garden. A celebration of Filipino culture. Artisan fairs and plant markets. Whether it’s music in the park or heading to the de Young Museum (open on Independence Day) for free programs, here are just some of the spectacular events and activities planned for the Fourth of July and the rest of the month. GGP Band Independence Day Celebration – Music Concourse – July 4

Celebrate America’s birthday at Golden Gate Park with a patriotic performance at the Golden Gate Park Bandshell. GGP concerts highlight the music of different nationalities and cultures with costumed performers, singers, dancers, and other special guests. Regular Sunday concerts begin at 1 p.m. and typically last until 2:30 and 2:45 p.m.

The Independence Day concert is on July 4 with conductor German Gonzalez, from 1 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. Other GGP Band concerts at the Spreckels Temple of Music for July 2022 include:

  • July 17 – Music from Disney, Pixar, Minecraft, and more
  • July 24 – Onstage Around the World
  • July 31 – Flotsam and Jetsam, Music with a Nautical Theme

July 4th Brunch – Beach Chalet – July 4

The Beach Chalet is hosting a Fourth of July brunch from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. with a menu that includes lobster, oysters, clams, Truffle Parmesan Fries, and calamari (reservations recommended). Prime rib lovers should come around 5 p.m. (when it’s available!).

Singer/Songwriter Wednesdays – Golden Gate Bandshell – July 6, 13, 20, 27

Free live concerts every Wednesday shine a spotlight on the talents of local singers and songwriters from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., with performances on the following dates in July:

  • July 6: Market to Bandshell Frances Ancheta Becker (4 p.m.), Howard Simon & Paul Weiss (5 p.m.), and Brother Spellbinder (6 p.m.) – produced in association with Sunset Mercantile
  • July 13: Kevin Radley (4 p.m.), Merle Badges (5 p.m.), and Pardon The Interruption (6 p.m.)
  • July 20: Hayley Lynn (4 p.m.), Blair Borax (5 p.m.), and Nalamora (6 p.m.)
  • July 27: Telltale Shimmer (4 p.m.), Vigilis (5 p.m.), and No Captains (6 p.m.)

NightLife: Islas – California Academy of Sciences – July 7

Enjoy a night dedicated to Filipino arts, culture, science, and music. Event highlights include traditional Filipino folk dances (with Parangal Dance Company), an Asmbly Hall fashion exhibit, DJs Shortkut and Vinroc, Easter egg weevils, specimens from the biodiverse coral reefs of the Philippines, new reptile species, and an exploration of conservation research in the Philippines.

NightLife events are held every Thursday at the Academy, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. You must be 21 or over with a valid I.D. to attend, plus show proof of being fully vaccinated.

Support small local businesses when you shop at this plant vendor, crafts, and vegan food market event from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Explore an assortment of rare plants, exclusive blooms, succulents, cacti, vegan treats, and organic self-care items. Splurge for early access at 11 a.m. to get first dibs. With a VIP ticket, you’ll score a goodie bag filled with a 4-inch plant and samples from selected vendors. Field Day – Hellman’s Hollow – July 9

Take advantage of a sunny day at Golden Gate Park by attending this free field day event from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. It doesn’t matter if it’s a board game or spikeball; there will be plenty of fun to enjoy—think volleyball, badminton, flag football, capture the flag, freeze tag, and much more.

Summer Artisan Fair – de Young Museum – July 9

De Young Museum invites you to attend the second annual Summer Artisan Fair, a one-day outdoor shopping event on the Museum’s café terrace. Twelve Bay Area artisans and designers will be on hand to answer questions and sell their handmade jewelry, home décor, apparel, and accessories. Proceeds from event sales are split between the artisans and the Fine Arts Museum. This free event is from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Golden Gate Bandshell Folk Fest 2022Golden Gate Bandshell – July 9

Spend your Saturday afternoon at Golden Gate Park with a host of bands and musicians playing folk music and more. This event is from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. and will feature V (Maund), Matt Jaffe, Michael Rufo, and Pete Kronowitt and The Karney Band.

Tennis Meet-Up – GGP Tennis Courts – July 10

Time to dust off those tennis rackets! Enjoy an afternoon of tennis with beginners, intermediates, and advanced players. The courts have been reserved for 90 minutes of play amongst old and new friends. The fee covers the cost of court rental and tennis balls. Those interested will meet at the Golden Gate Park Tennis Complex at 11:15 a.m. for introductions. By 11:30 a.m., everyone will break into groups for a warmup and play until 1 p.m.

Crucial Reggae Sunday – Golden Gate Bandshell – July 10, 17, 24

Unwind with reggae rhythms at the Bandshell with Crucial and special guests from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The July 2022 schedule includes the following:

Easy Garden Sketching – SF Botanical Garden – July 16

Join artist Eileen P. Goldenberg for an introductory workshop illustrating the wonderful world of sketching plants with sketch kits. The Succulent Garden will serve as inspiration. The fee for this workshop is $150 (all materials included). In addition, participants will receive watercolor paper, a small paint palette, water brush, and a fountain pen. This event is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Ales for ALS Launch Party – Beach Chalet – July 16

If you’re a beer lover, you won’t want to miss the launch of a new brew: Fast Ball IPA. With every purchase of this IPA, the Chalet will donate one dollar towards ALS Research. In addition, those attending receive a complimentary, limited-edition Fast Ball IPA Ales for ALS pint glass while supplies last. The free celebration is from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Forest Bathing at the Garden – SF Botanical Garden – July 16

Craving to feel more grounded? The Garden has just the thing to quiet your mind and help you to destress. During this relaxing 2 to 2 ½-hour walk, a certified Forest Therapy Guide will take you through a series of explorations to help you connect more with nature and experience this form of forest therapy. Bring the kids to this family-friendly event at Golden Gate Park featuring entertainment provided by Charity and the JAMBand, Magician Mike Della Penna, and other special guests from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Art, Fashion, and Activism with Youth Art Exchange – de Young Museum – July 30

Inspired by The Obama Portraits Tour, the Museum is hosting a daylong celebration of fashion, art, and activism. This program includes a pop-up art exhibition, hands-on artmaking, fashion show, and live music sets from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Bay Area Youth Art Exchange (YAX) students will showcase their talents. The schedule of events for this free program is:

  • 11 a.m.– 4 p.m.: Pop-up YAX exhibition, Wilsey Court
  • 11 a.m.– 4 p.m.: Artmaking activity (all ages), Wilsey Court
