We’re in for another spectacular July at Golden Gate Park as public spaces across the park resume more of the activities and attractions we love to enjoy. So take a bit of time to dust off your roller skates, lace up your running shoes, and learn new ways to create art (including planet-friendly crafts!). Roller Disco Party – 6th Ave & Kennedy Drive – July 4, 11, 18, 25

Celebrate the Fourth of July, plus unwind every Sunday in July at the Skatin’ Place at Golden Gate Park. Here, you’ll meet new friends and get a chance to practice your disco moves at the best place to outdoor roller skate in San Francisco. Group skates are from noon to 5 p.m. Free.

NightLife: Science Show & Tell – California Academy of Sciences – July 8, 15, 22, 29

Just some of the action and wonder you can look forward to during a NightLife event include:

  • access to the Academy’s latest aquarium exhibit, Venom
  • nearly 40,000 live animals, such as an albino alligator named Claude, and
  • over 200,000 gallons of beauty with one of the world’s largest living coral reef displays (aka the Philippine Coral Reef tank).

The festivities begin at 6 p.m. until 10 p.m. You must be 21 years or older, show valid I.D. to enter, plus purchase your ticket to one of this month’s events here, like:

NightLife: Science Show & Tell – July 29: The theme for tonight’s NighLight focuses on the Academy’s conservation efforts and cutting-edge biodiversity research locally and globally, making a difference in the world.

NoCal | AT Local – First Thursday Coffee Break – Music Concourse – July 8

Grab a fresh cup of Joe, tea, cocoa, and a pastry and meet up with the ArtTable Northern California Chapter, a “professional organization dedicated to advancing the leadership of women in the visual arts.” This gathering is a members-only event, but you can join today and start coming to First Thursday Coffee Breaks for in-person meet-ups from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m.

Museum Day at the de Young – de Young Museum – July 10

There are still a few spots left to enjoy a day at the museum, hosted by The Urban Adventure, where you can meet up with other art lovers and explore various exhibits together. Afterward, the group heads to Tartine to discuss the artworks that dazzled them the most. This adventure is from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. The cost is $20 for non-members ($15 for members and $5 for premium members). You must register here if you are interested.

Plant Sale – Fragrant Plants – S.F. Botanical Garden – July 10 & 11

The Fragrant Plant sale at the San Francisco Botanical Garden has been extended, and you now have an extra two days to purchase herbs and aromatic plants you can use to cook, make cocktails, and concoct medicine. The Plant Arbor is open from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Leaner Stronger Faster™ Youth Athletic Camp – July 10

This sports conditioning camp hosted by Push And Pull Performance™ is geared towards youth ages 8 to 17 and is open to all S.F. Bay Area youth athletes. During this one-day event, participants will learn how to improve their agility, speed, motor movements, coordination, and overall athletic performance. The day begins with a brief assessment, and by day’s end, a final evaluation demonstrates to parents the improvements each child has made.

This camp caters to athletes in all sports and runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Windmill 10K – Dutch Windmill – July 11

If you’re looking for a fun run at Golden Gate Park, the DSE hosts races like this Windmill 10K, which begins at the Dutch Windmill and continues throughout Kennedy Drive and McLaren Lodge. These races are currently limited to pre-registered DSE Members only; to become a member, click here, and you’ll receive pre-registration details via e-mail. The fee for Standard members is $5 per race (Gold, Teen, and Child Memberships include unlimited events).

Climate Creative Pop-Up Gallery + Celebration – Conservatory of Flowers – July 17

This pop-up gallery celebrates reduction, reuse, and repurposing with plenty of food, music, projection art, and onsite crafting at the Conservatory. So if you’re looking for a fun, late afternoon activity, come for inspiration, listen to the tunes, and create planet-friendly art from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. While donations are welcome, this is a free event. Sound Meditation – S.F. Botanical Garden – July 18

Sit back and relax at this session of sound meditation that takes place outdoors in the grass. Don’t forget to bring along items that will enhance your comfort, like a pillow, blanket, or yoga mat. This “live concert of sound and vibration” is meant to center you and provide an auditory setting with complimentary sounds and scents to relax your body and mind.

Casting Games – GGACC Casting Ponds – July 18

Everyone is welcome (even beginners) to the Golden Gate Angling & Casting Club’s Casting Games. Registered participants can test their skills against the GGACC, Oakland Casting Club, and San Jose Flycasters. Never done it before, but have an interest? There will be training sessions. Note: All GGACC Casting Games are conducted under ACA rules and are considered ACA “registered” events (UON).

The casting games at the GGACC casting ponds generally occur on the third Sunday of each month from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. There is a $1 entry fee for each casting event: Dry Fly, Bass Bug, 5/8oz Plug, 1/4oz Spin Dist. Trng.

Mindful, Meditative Watercolors – S.F. Botanical Garden – July 24

Make new connections within yourself and the community with a workshop that encourages you to breathe and paint through a meditative process involving short breathing and movement exercises, plus unique art creation. You should expect to create a moment of zen, learn the basic watercolor painting techniques, and connect with a group of local creatives. You will need to bring a blanket and art supplies. This event is from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

This activity calls for the following materials:

  • watercolor paint
  • watercolor brush
  • watercolor paper
  • cup of water

But, you can also enjoy the experience using markers, colored pencils, or a pen. If you need supplies, you can pre-purchase this watercolor kit separately (and get it on the day of the class).

Reiki + Sound Soundbath – George Washington Grove – July 24 & 25

Your next visit to Golden Gate Park may explore the transformative meditation of Reiki Energy and Crystal Singing Bowls with Source Field Sound, Nicola Buffa. This relaxing outdoor experience, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., centers on Crystaline Transmission of healing frequencies. The tickets are $33. You can get them here.

We suggest arriving at 1 p.m. promptly to set up your “Meditation Nest” (like blankets, yoga mats, cushions, and an eye pillow). The sound begins at 1:20 p.m.
