In late July, San Francisco expanded its face-covering rules requiring anyone over the age of 9 to wear a face-covering when within 6 feet of people they don’t live with (even when outside)—this includes when passing people in public places, like on a sidewalk or hiking trail. During your visit to Golden Gate Park, it’s essential to take precautions to minimize the spread of COVID-19, such as wearing a mask and socially distancing yourself from others.

The following park updates include closures, re-openings, cancellations, and postponements for activities and Golden Gate Park events in August and July.

What is Open at Golden Gate Park?

Japanese Tea Garden

The Japanese Tea Garden reopened on July 22 and is limited to 100 visitors from Wednesday through Sunday (9 a.m. to 5:45 p.m.). The Tea Garden is closed on Mondays and Tuesday until further notice. The Japanese Tea House and Gift Shop reopened on July 29, 2020. The Tea Garden offers a Free Hour on Wednesday and Friday only (9 a.m. – 10 a.m.).

To avoid congestion, guests will use one-way pathways to visit the Garden. Bathrooms and various high-touch areas (such as steep bridges) will remain closed. Masks must be worn by all who visit the park. Staff members will monitor the entrances and exits to prevent crowds and ensure visitors are following social distancing measures.

We recommend purchasing tickets to the Japanese Tea Garden in advance online here.

San Francisco Botanical Garden

Seven days a week, the San Francisco Botanical Garden opens daily at 7:30 a.m. It closes one hour after the last entry, which is at 6 p.m. The Plant Arbor is open on weekends from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The Library and Garden Bookstore remains closed until further notice.

Use the Main Gate (at the corner of Ninth Ave. at Lincoln Way) to enter the Garden. The Friend (North) Gate (at MLK Jr. Drive off the Music Concourse) is temporarily closed.

The Garden is also slowly bringing back onsite activities, such as Bean Sprouts Family Days (presented by Kaiser Permanente). Pre-registration is required; all sessions take place between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. In August, families may attend on the 11th, 13th, 18th, 20th, 25th, and 27th. Secure your place by claiming a free family ticket here.
