Fall in love with all of the things to do at Golden Gate Park in February 2022. This month, take the kids to Wander Woods, the Academy’s brand-new outdoor play space, which provides a healthy escape for kids as they climb, crawl, climb and enjoy hands-on fun with natural materials and native plants. In addition, the Entwined illuminated forest is here for another month, and we’re sure you can find a handful of lovely ways to celebrate Valentine’s Day at Golden Gate Park. Birds, flowers, art, and meditation also round out the February calendar of events at Golden Gate Park. Here’s an overview of activities and attractions for you to enjoy this month:

Lunar New Year NightLife – California Academy of Sciences – February 3

In celebration of 2022’s Year of the Tiger, this amazing NightLife is all about the Lunar New Year. Some of the fun to expect includes a traditional lion dance performance by Chinatown’s Jing Mo Athletic Association and a rundown of the history of Chinese tea ceremonies. Mooncakes and Milk Bread cookbook author, Kristina Cho, will present a cooking demonstration. This event is from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. and is for the 21+ crowd (I.D.s will be checked). Note: Proof of full vaccination and booster shot (if eligible) is required.

NightSchool: Fungi Underground – California Academy of Sciences [virtual] – February 3

Mushrooms and other underground living networks are the topics of discussion for the NightSchool virtual fun this February 3rd. Learn how plants and fungi interact. Gain insight into what makes soil healthy. Explore the roles that mammals and birds play in helping to disperse truffle spores. This NightLife online programming is intended for audiences 21 years or older. Outdoor Group Singing Class – Mothers Meadow – February 6 & 20

Calling all beginner vocalists and seasoned songstresses! Here’s an opportunity to enjoy daily singing exercises and elevate your confidence and stage presence as a performer. Take part in an outdoor group singing class at Golden Gate Park. Join others to learn ways to open up your voice, fine-tune your performance skills, and discuss topics of songwriting, singing, and more with like-minded individuals.

The class will meet in the grove of trees across the Mothers Meadow, located at 573 Martin Luther King Jr Drive. Classes are from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and cost $10.

Kaiser Permanente San Francisco Half Marathon – JFK Drive – February 6 

In search of a February running event in San Francisco? Consider the Kaiser Permanente SF 5K, Half Marathon, or the new 10K option. The 5K course is a USA Track & Field-certified race that’s a real winner for those who love races with a scenic, fast pace. The 3.1-mile downhill Golden Gate Park running event has been selected as the Road Race of the Year by the Road Runners Club of America on more than one occasion. There will be staggered starts for all race events, with the runs starting at John F. Kennedy Drive east of Stow Lake Drive. The 5K begins promptly at 8 a.m. (the 10K and Half Marathon are at 8:10 a.m.).

After the race, runners and walkers can meet in the post-race area for food, beverages, free massages, and other goodies. For more Half Marathon and 5K details, click here.

Birding at the Garden with Golden Gate Audubon – SF Botanical Garden – February 6

If you love catching sight of San Francisco’s colorful collection of native and visiting feathered friends, you’re sure to enjoy a stroll through the Garden surrounded by over 8,000 kinds of plants. Experienced birders from Golden Gate Audubon will lead you on a free walk from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Don’t forget to bring a pair of binoculars. Note: Heavy rain cancels this event.

Entwined Valentine’s Day Display – Peacock Meadow – February 11-14

Whether you’ve visited a handful of times or have missed out completely, don’t worry; the illuminated “Entwined” art installation (aka the “Lighted Forest”) is extended for another month through March 5, 2022. The sight will also become a romantic place to take your sweetheart to celebrate Valentine’s Day. It’s free to see the brilliant display, outfitted with new sculptures, lights, and technological wonders.

Rally to Save Car-Free JFK Drive – Conservatory of Flowers – February 12

Meet at the Conservatory of Flowers for an event geared towards preserving a car-free JFK Drive (a subject that the Board of Supervisors is getting ready to vote on soon). Let your voice be heard! This event will have dragon dancers, roller skating performances, arts and crafts, speeches, and more—something for everyone. Note: You can wear red to show your support for car-free Sundays and celebrate the Lunar New Year.

Half-Day Meditation Retreat – SF Botanical Garden – February 12

Join Charity Kahn for an extended meditation practice period from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Garden. A few of the activities you can look forward to include walking meditation, Qigong, body awareness, and sitting meditation. Note: The retreat ends with a lunch amongst participants; you are to bring your own lunch. Tickets are $60 for this event.

Valentine’s Day Lunch – Park Chalet – February 14

Love is in the air, and Golden Gate Park has just the thing to help you have a good time on one of the most celebrated days of romance around. Take your sweetie out for lunch at the Park Chalet. Reservations are available from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. where you can dine on Corned Beef Hash, Blueberry Lemon Ricotta Beignets, Parmesan Truffle Fries, Maine Lobster Roll, Flat Iron Steak and Frites, Butterscotch Pudding, and so much more.

SF Beer Week – Beach Chalet – February 15 – 20

If you’re a fan of beer, you won’t want to miss the celebration at the Beach Chalet. It’s the perfect time to savor custom brews with unique menu pairings not available on the restaurant’s usual menus.

Magnolia Curator Tour – SF Botanical Garden – February 17 & 26

Explore the history and importance of the Garden’s magnolia collection with a walking tour led by one of the Garden’s curatorial staff. Garden admittance is included. Note: Heavy rain and low attendance will cancel this event, which lasts around an hour and a half. The tour is offered twice this month (on February 17 and February 26) at 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. The cost for this event is $28.

San Francisco Summer Resource Fair – SF County Fair Building – February 19

Initially scheduled for February 5, the San Francisco Citywide Summer Resource Fair was postponed to February 19 (from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.) to provide the safest conditions for visitors.

All attendees over the age of 12 must show proof of vaccination at the door to attend. All attendees over the age of 2 will be required to wear face coverings. This year, the Fair will serve children in grades K-8 and their families.

Drawing Magnolias and Camellias – SF Botanical Garden – February 23

Magnolias and camellias are popular winter- and early spring flowers in San Francisco, just one reason why they are the stars of this Nina Antze-guided workshop. You’ll use specimens from the Garden to explore colored pencil techniques such as mixing and layering color and using watercolor pencils to underpaint. This event is from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. All levels are welcome to join in the fun. The cost is $80 for the general public, with SFBG members receiving a 10% discount.

Annual Orchid Expo, Show & Sale – SF County Building – February 24, 25, 26, 27

Calling all orchid lovers, the 69th Annual Pacific Orchid Exposition is coming to town, and there will be thousands of beautiful blooms and plants on display. The San Francisco Orchid Society is also selling many plants, plus you’ll get to browse the wares of local, national, and international nurseries. Other highlights include experts conducting hands-on demos and the pros providing you with valuable information on how to grow and care for your orchids.

The Expo is a family-friendly event with special fun for kids and visitors of all ages. All attendees are required to show vaccination proof and wear a mask.

The Orchid Masquerade Show and Sale is from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Single Day General Admission Prices are $12 in advance and $15 at the door. Buy tickets to the Orchid Expo. Note: February 24 is a preview night.

Kennedy Drive 8K – Golden Gate Park – February 27

There’s nothing like completing an 8K to say ‘goodbye’ to February with gusto. This race event is scheduled for 9 a.m. – 11 a.m. The course route takes participants on an uphill run through Middle Drive, Overlook Drive path, Transverse, Kennedy Drive, and Kezar Drive.
