Situated in the middle of Golden Gate Park, the Angler’s Lodge is a mountain-style rustic structure that hosts an array of activities and free opportunities to explore fly casting. With members from all over the United States and the world, many of the highest-ranking casters across the globe proudly represent the Golden Gate Angling and Casting Club. The Lodge maintains three pools that are open to all.

The club that currently occupies the Lodge was organized in 1933, as an offshoot of the San Francisco Fly Casting Club, which dates back to 1894. The original location of the club was Stow Lake, but moved to its present space when the facilities were completed in 1939.

Things to Do

The Lodge makes it easy for interested parties to learn more about fly casting and actively participate in the pursuit. The pools are open to anyone looking to practice their casting technique. Beginners are encouraged to visit, and those who do not own a rod will have one provided. Use of the pools is free, and visitors often find eager members willing to offer tips.

The lodge is also responsible for organizing and offering free casting lessons that take place at the GGACC Angler’s Lodge and Casting Pools. The casting classes are typically offered on the second Saturday of each month, but all dates are highlighted on their website. In order to participate, you must RSVP beforehand by clicking the RSVP link on the website or contacting John C. Till at [email protected]

The Lodge also provides seminars on fly and plug casting that range from beginner to expert level. One of the more popular events is the annual free fly casting seminar directed by a master instructor that lasts for two days. Throughout the year, many Sundays are reserved for the Lodge’s casting tournaments, including local, regional, and national competitions.

Inside of the Lodge, you can wander about the library to browse a collection of books and tapes on fishing. Decorating the walls and shelves are club memorabilia and photographs. Visitors often enjoy the delightful handcrafted details of the building. During the springtime, a visit to the Lodge introduces you to the blooms of a lovely rhododendron garden.

The entrance to the Angler’s Lodge at Golden Gate Park is located on John F. Kennedy Drive in the western end of the park. There is a sign designating ‘Angler’s Lodge’ across from the Buffalo Paddock.
